THE WHARTON CONCERTO - The Wharton Concerto is a concerto for bass trombone and jazz band. The bass trombone part incorporates fast moving lines with a complete use of the range and will challenge any good bass trombonist. The solo bass trombone is not required to improvise and there is a featured improvised solo for tenor saxophone. The chart also calls for four flutes. The solo part is difficult and the band parts are moderately difficult. |

STRAYHORN - This piece recalls the spirit of of Billy and Duke's collaboration thru the use of traditional jazz harmonic devices, a "stride" piano soli, and an alto sax solo reminiscent of Johnny Hodges, Duke's long-time lead alto. The last note of the piece recalls the accomplishments of Harry Carney, Duke's closest traveling companion, and a supreme baritone saxophonist. This is a hauntingly lush ballad. |
