Dave Eshelman Jazz Studies

California State University,
Hayward
Under Dave Eshelman's direction since 1985, California State University, Hayward big bands have consistently garnered top awards. They have been featured performers at California Music Educators State Conventions and at international festivals in Montreux, Switzerland; Vienne, France; Perugia, Italy; and Brazil. The Jazz Ensemble's two-set cd-Excursions -received high praise in Jazz Times and downbeat magazines while other recordings -These Times. and Metro - have been praised as among the nation's top collegiate cds by columnist Herb Wong of the Jazz Educators Journal.


Jazz Studies Program

Cal State's jazz program is designed for students seeking experience in performance, theory, improvisation, and the writing of jazz.The goal of the program is to provide a creative environment that will enhance the artistic and technical growth of each student. Training is designed to prepare students for the professional arena of composing and arranging, and the performance of musical and stage shows, jingles and recording sessions. Outstanding performers from the national jazz community are hosted seasonally and perform with the band in clinic and concert presentations providing interaction between student and professional.

Classes in the Jazz Studies Program at Cal State University, Hayward include:
the big band jazz ensembles, small groups, jazz theory and improvisation, jazz arranging, and history of jazz

Adjunct Faculty
Tenor saxophone virtuoso, Dann Zinn, joined the jazz faculty in 1994 as teacher of jazz combos, Jazz Studio Band, individual saxophone studies and saxophone ensemble. Don Cardoza teaches the jazz piano course and Jay Rizzetto trumpet.
